Attempt Any Five questions.

1.

a) Explain the working principle of a 1-ϕ transformer on No-load. [8]

b) Find (i) the active and reactive components of no-load current and (ii) no-load current of a 440/220v single phase transformer if power input at no-load to HV winding is 80W and p.f. of no-load current is 0.3 logging. [8]

2.

a) What is a transformer rated in KVA and not KW? Write down the necessary conditions for parallel operation of a 1ϕ transformer. [8]

b) A 1ϕ, 10KVA, 500/250V, 50 HZ transformer has the following constants: [8]

Reactance: Primary = 0.2𝛺     Secondary = 0.5𝛺
Resistance: Primary = 0.4𝛺     Secondary = 0.1𝛺

What would be the reading of the instruments when the transformer is connected for open circuit and short circuit test?

a) What are conditions to meet the parallel operation of three phase transformers. Explain. [8]

b) Explain any two: [8]

i) Shunt wound dc generator.
ii) Series wound dc generator.
iii) Compound wound DC generator.

4.

a) Explain with the help of graph, the critical resistance (Rc) for a dc shunt generator. [8]

b) A long-shunt compound wound dc generator delivers a load current of 50A at 500V and has armature, series field and shunt field resistance of 0.05𝛺, 0.03𝛺 and 250𝛺 respectively. Calculate the generated voltage and armature current. Allow 1V per brush for contact drop. (Assume two brushes) [8]

5.

a) Explain briefly the working principle of a dc motor. What is the significance of Back emf? [4+4=8]

b) A 120V at dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of o.2𝛺 and a brush volt drop of 2V. The rated full load current is 75A. Calculate the current at the instant of starting. Assume field winding resistance of 120𝛺. [8]

6. Write short notes on: (Any Four) [4x4=16]

(a) Auto transformer.
(b) Speed control of DC motor.
(c) Commutation.
(d) Transformation Ratio.
(e) Buchhloz's Relay.
